Chapter Sixteen

“I'm thinking of going out, like to a pub or nightclub.”

Adam’s pen stops it’s scribbling and his head rises slowly until he's staring at me.

“Oh stop it, it’s not like I've never gone out.”

It’s just his eyebrows that rise this time but he makes his point.

“Okay so I've never gone out but I want to. I'm sick of being locked up inside for nothing. Okay, so it’s not nothing, but it’s time to get over the fear. Micah can’t get me anymore and I need to stop using him as an excuse to avoid the world. Yeah, I know you’ve been telling me this for years but I think Kohan’s made me see that I can trust people. Well, he's shown me that I can trust him so that’s a start, isn’t it?” The word vomit finally stops and I can see that it’s amused Adam far too much.

“Well I don’t know if I should charge you for the hour now because you pretty much did all that on your own.” He leans forward and puts his pad and pen on the little table in between us. “Do you want to discuss it or is your mind sorted?”

“No let’s chat.”

“Okay, so why do you want to go out now?”

“I met a girl.” It’s kind of accurate but I mainly say this to see Adam’s reaction. I'm not disappointed when his eyes widen and he stutters something I don’t catch. I take pity on him and explain before he bursts a brain vessel. “Kohan’s best friend to be exact. Sophie is a freaking force of nature and she made me realise that people looking at me isn’t always a problem. We met for coffee and she didn’t give a shit what people thought about her. I want to be like that, not caring what people think.”

Adam looks a bit more composed when he speaks. “That wasn’t funny, even if I was planning my new extension with all the new appointments you would need.” He winks at me and I laugh at him. This is why I wanted Adam to be my therapist, he knows exactly how to deal with all my shit but he's also funny and down to earth. I've never felt like he's judging me so I've always felt able to talk to him and he feels more like a friend now than a therapist. “I'm happy that you’ve decided to take some positive steps in your life. I've been telling you for a while that putting everything on hold has had a negative impact on your life. Micah’s been in jail for a year so I think you are allowed to feel safe now.”

“I know you're right but I think I needed to see it myself. Between Kohan and Sophie I'm seeing the life I can have.”

Adam sits back in his chair and crosses one leg over the other as he studies me. He stays silent for too long and when I can’t bear it any longer I speak up.
